Turn your gauge swatch into exact numbers: how many stitches to start with and how many rows to work for any finished size, in inches or centimeters.
Yields 16.0 sts / 12.0 rows in standard 4"
Chain or foundation stitch to reach 36 inches
Work until project measures 48 inches
Standard gauge: 16.0 sts in 4"
Standard gauge: 12.0 rows in 4"

Every crocheter's stitches are a slightly different size, so a pattern's stitch counts only produce the stated size if your gauge matches the designer's. This calculator skips that guesswork. It measures your stitches from your swatch and scales them to the size you want.
You get four numbers:
Your swatch has 16 stitches and 12 rows across a 4 × 4 inch square. You want a baby blanket 36 inches wide and 48 inches long.
If your pattern uses a stitch repeat, for example a multiple of 4 plus 1, adjust 144 to the nearest number that fits. The stitch count calculator does that rounding for you, and the chain calculator adds the right number of turning chains.
The result can only be as accurate as your swatch:
For the full story on why gauge matters, read our guide to crochet gauge.
Stitches per inch = swatch stitches ÷ swatch width. Foundation stitches = finished width × stitches per inch. Rows per inch = swatch rows ÷ swatch height. Total rows = finished length × rows per inch. Results are rounded to whole stitches.
About 6 inches (15 cm) square, so you can measure 4 inches in the middle away from the distorted edges.

Gauge is the translation key between the designer's hands and yours. Learn how to make a swatch that tells the truth, measure it, match the pattern, and use the math to size any project.
